Celebrating Jazz by Young Musicians
featuring: Alexandra Ridout Quintet / Lancashire Youth Jazz Orchestra / Jam Experiment
This festival gig is an opportunity for Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues to demonstrate an exciting future for live jazz music through appearances of the best young jazz musicians from Lancashire and across the UK. Lancashire Youth Jazz Orchestra (LYJO), a premier regional big band directed by Paul J Rigby, is joined in music by two young bands with a huge national profile thanks to one member from each UK band becoming a winner of the BBC’s Young Jazz Musician of the Year Award in 2015 and 2016. Alexandra Ridout, trumpeter and Award Winner for 2016, brings the Alexandra Ridout Quintet to open this youth jazz concert in fine style, following an appearance at the 2016 Manchester Jazz Festival. Her band will be followed by locally acclaimed and accomplished band, the Lancashire Youth Jazz Orchestra, and a sensational finale will see a combination of both bands joining with Jam Experiment, our Festival’s first ever Band-in-residence, featuring Alexander Bone, the 2015 Young Jazz Musician of the Year. Be sure to join us at this celebration of high quality live jazz from premier young jazz musicians.

Alexandra Ridout Quintet
Alexandra Ridout (17) is the current holder of the BBC Young Musician Jazz Award 2016. "We were enchanted by Alexandra’s presence as a musician, her sound, but I think most importantly there was a relationship with the blues and swinging that sounds important in her playing” – Julian Joseph, Chair of the jury of the BBC Young Musician Jazz Award 2016.
Alexandra brings her precociously talented quintet of Noah Stoneman (15) – piano, Miles Mindlin (15) – guitar, Freddie Jensen (17) – bass and Luca Caruso (17) – drums to performing a set of originals and standards, from classic jazz to D’Angelo.
Rory Ingham (trombone), Alexander Bone (saxophone), Toby Comeau (keys), Joe Lee (bass), Jonathan Mansfield (drums)
Jam Experiment are a young jazz quintet now based in London, originally coming together at Chetham's School of Music, Manchester. The band are based in London, studying at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Expect an energetic approach of original compositions and arrangements.
"Jam Experiment is one of the best young bands I've ever heard. The instrumental playing is highly accomplished, but most impressively, this is a band that swings, has great arrangements and knows how to present itself. A really refreshing presence on the scene."- Alan Barnes
